Fitness Magazine features pistachios as one of eight "superfoods" that help beat cancer, heart disease and diabetes.
It's time to give this little green nut a second look. "Pistachios are second only to wine as a source of the plant chemical resvertrol, which may play a role in fighting cancer and heart disease," says Grotto. They're rich in heart-healthy compounds, including plant sterols; combined with their high monounsaturated fat content, the nut is an excellent addition to your diet. Finally, pistachios have the highest level of lutein — an eye-health booster — of any tree nut and are a good source of fiber, protein and potassium.
TRY: Adding them to wild rice or trail mix, tossing a handful on top of your favorite cereal or chopping finely to use as a coating for fish, chicken or meat.
